New NYPUM Class Beginning at Eliada
ASHEVILLE –April 2009 – On Tuesday, June 16th, a new session
of National Youth Project Using Minibikes (NYPUM) classes will begin at Eliada. Classes run for 15 weeks, will be open to students in the community ages 10-17, and will be held once weekly from 4-6 pm. The cost to participate is $20/week, and parents may participate at no extra charge.
NYPUM began in 1969 as an innovative way to engage youth and promote their development. Honda donated 10,000 minibikes because they recognized that some children were not interested in traditional sports and didn't respond to other youth services, but the lure of the outdoors and the experience of riding minibikes was very exciting. Presently operating 46 programs in urban, suburban and rural communities from Los Angeles to Boston, NYPUM programs are run by non-profit or municipal youth agencies.
Students will learn to ride on the flat track and progress from riding in the field to trail rides. The class will culminate in a day-long field trip to a dirt bike park in Greeneville, TN (appx. 45 min from Asheville). There is a strong emphasis on Character Development and goal setting.
