TASC

saddlinghorse.jpgEliada's Therapeutic Animal Stewardship Cooperative provides animal-assisted therapy for high risk clients with behavioral or emotional problems. Currently the TASC family includes eleven horses, four cats, three goats, and a donkey. Animal therapy can be especially helpful for children who have difficulty with emotional closeness, social interaction, self-confidence, impulse and anger control, animal abuse history, and those who refuse to accept responsibility. Activities include teaching horse care skills, learning appropriate assertiveness through riding skills, and experiencing the feelings of bonding through basic relationship development with another living creature. We involve children in the day-to-day care of the animals; in this way, the TASC program also has a valuable vocation component that can help participants learn new skills.

By feeding, touching, grooming, and caring for the animals, children begin to outwardly demonstrate commitment and empathy. By cleaning stalls, harvesting hay, doctoring injuries, and fixing fences, young people begin to understand responsibility and the value of honest work. TASC activities include riding ring activities, groundwork with the horses, trail riding, learning horse body language and the importance of non-verbal communication, trust, grooming and bathing, hoof and vet care, proper everyday care of the animals, tacking horses and cooling out after riding, care of equipment, and work projects around the farm. Teambuilding activities are also included in the program.

Eliada's TASC program is more than just learning to ride or interacting with animals. It is a holistic program that challenges young people to overcome fears, care deeply, and connect with other living creatures, all of which carries over to stronger relationships with themselves, their families, and society in general.
