NYPUM (National Youth Project Using Mini-Bikes)
NYPUM is a national youth program using mini-bike riding lessons as an incentive – motivating students to make positive changes in their lives. This incentive, healthy peer relationships and positive adult role models combine to make NYPUM a powerful tool in enhancing the lives of participants. NYPUM strives to provide students with the opportunity to experience success and to teach the sense of responsibility that comes with being a safe responsible driver.
NYPUM provides students with twenty-one (21) lessons that initially focus on such elementary activities as how to balance on the mini-bike and progresses to more complex steps such as shifting gears and controlling the speed of the bike. The focus of these lessons is to develop mastery of a set of skills necessary to safely operate the bikes and simultaneously build the student’s confidence and sense of accomplishment as these skills are acquired. End of course field trips are organized to local dirt-bike parks. Students may also participate in regional and national rodeos sponsored by National NYPUM. At these events, students compete as individuals and teams in races and activities designed to test their agility and control on the mini-bike.
In NYPUM each participant is asked to set 3 personal development goals. As students demonstrate progression on each of their goals and their 21 lessons they earn riding time on Eliada’s extensive system of trails.
The bikes serve as a great motivational tool as participants set and work on academic and behavioral goals in order to earn time on the bikes. Students work hard each week on their goals and have a great time on our beginner, intermediate and advanced trail-riding system. NYPUM allows the students to experience a unique sense of freedom and personal responsibility as they master their lessons on the learning track and then take off onto trails around the hay field, over our own Slippy Mountain and off-campus terrain.
Like many physical activities, there is an inherent risk in riding mini-bikes. Eliada’s NYPUM program requires a Certified NYPUM Instructor (CNI) and strict adherence to the Guide to NYPUM. Trained Track Safety Supervisors assist the certified instructor with the NYPUM activities.
Eliada is blessed to be one of the 46 NYPUM chapters across the nation.
