Amanda
Amanda came to live at Eliada’s Cummings Cottage in April of this year. Initially, she did not want to participate in activities and spent much of her time being upset. She was dealing with the death of her grandmother and other losses. She also had major conflicts with family members and deeply ingrained habits that limited her ability to be successful. She was seen among the other students and staff as bossy, attention seeking, and eager to avoid discussion about her problems.
As time went on, Amanda began to show that she was serious about making changes. Her behavioral and academic performance began to improve, and she showed real commitment to bettering relationships with family, staff, and peers. As she cultivated patience and confidence, she began to have more understanding of herself and others.
What had previously been “bossiness” has transformed into incredible leadership. Amanda set high goals for herself, and wanted to become the first person to conquer the badge level system in Cummings Cottage. Similar to badges earned in scouting, students in Cummings earn badges for mastering progressively more difficult skills. The final badge, leadership, signifies that the student has reached the highest skill level possible. Already, Amanda has earned more badges than her peers, past or present. She is a role model for other students and has grown into a confident and respectful young lady.
To meet Amanda now, one would have no hint of her previous issues. Like many young girls, she enjoys painting her fingernails, getting her hair done, and reading the “Twilight” series. She loves to listen to music, dance, and ride horses. Amanda is preparing to move to a therapeutic foster home in December. When she leaves, she will take with her many new skills, fond memories, and a strong foundation for success. If she has her way, she’ll also be leaving as the first-ever recipient of the leadership badge.
Congratulations, Amanda!
